Weekend

Friday:
Friday seems like forever ago...  we had an ok week, always busy.  But Friday night, I really wanted to stay in... but I of course didn't have food for supper!  So... we grabbed food out and had a really good time.  Anyway, then we went to Colleen's twin sisters house - because they have brand new puppies - Morkie's (Maltese & Yorkie mix).  OH MY GOSH.  It was needed to get some snuggles in on those puppies!  We had such a great time visiting the puppies and the families...  quick visit, but the kids had fun meeting the pups too.  It definitely solidified that when we lose Murphy, another pup will be in our family sometime!

Anyway... that was our Friday night.

Saturday:
Ryan went to work... such a busy time for him.
The kids and I stuck around the house... did some stuff, hung out, got groceries, made crafts... just fiddled around in the morning.

Saturday afternoon, Cora had a birthday party to go to...

Saturday night we went out for supper again, but was a nice night.

Sunday:
Church...  and another rainy Sunday.   Flag FB was cancelled again...  we just hung out at home for awhile.  I did a few errands, otherwise that's about it. It was a pretty boring, lazy day actually.  Loved every second of it, but then by supper time we were bored and kind of going crazy.  ha.  Can't find a happy-medium with those types of days.  ha.

Side note - Cora is accident prone!!
She's gotten hurt the past couple days lately... falling, tripping, falling off of her scooter and the big one - scraping her back on a table.  The kid has used so many band aids lately!

Kayson - 5th Grade Field Trip (Kuehn Conservation)

Lucky for us, we have friends that go on field trips... and send us pictures of our kids.  ha.

Kayson - Changing/Growing up

Our boy is changing...  growing up... showing more and more attitude... showing he's tired...  showing the differences.

Being 10 is hard - I mean, I don't really remember being 10, but I'm certain it was a trying time in my life.  As this is for every kid, I'm sure.

  • Kayson is in that 'tween' stage...
    • Characteristics of tween - tweens will often act like teenagers or even adults one minute, while reverting to childish behaviors.
  • He's immature in some things - specifically 'growing up' stuff.
  • He's lazy...  period.  I've noticed over the past several months that he's just lazy - and procrastinates at everything that is asked of him.  This is a huge struggle for me... if I'm asked to do something, it's done, now.  Granted, I'm 41.  But this is frustrating and pulls at my heartstrings too...
  • His emotions are high... and all over the board.

This has been hard for me... and Ryan.  I see a lot more of the emotions and attitude as I'm around more.  I'm trying so hard to be patient and understanding...  I need to be able to talk with him about these things, but it's hard... and I also have a hard time finding the 'right' words.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some notes I've found that are good reminders of what Kayson is experiencing:

A tween is a child between the ages of 9 and 12. A tween is no longer a little child, but not quite a teenager. They are in between the two age groups and their behavior and emotions reflect that.
While a tween is not yet in the midst of adolescence, he or she will face a variety of obstacles in the next few years:
  • Transition from elementary to middle school: The change in school curriculum and structure can be more difficult for some children than others.
  • Approaching puberty: Big changes are going to start or have already begun to happen to a tween's body.
  • Increasing responsibilities: Tweens are often more involved in extra-curricular activities and can take on more chores and responsibilities at home.
  • Increasing amounts of homework: The homework load alone can be a big change for tweens and parents should be ready to help if needed. Good study habits now can last a lifetime.
  • Exposure to dangerous behaviors: A tween faces new pressures from their peers including drugs, sex, alcohol, and more. Kids are a curious bunch and peer pressure is strong among tweens. This is the age when they will just be learning about the dangers of the world and there can be many myths circulating in middle school hallways.

Tweens can be a challenge to parents and teachers. One minute they can be sweet and loving, the next they can be moody and difficult.
  • Boys enter puberty around 11 and growth spurts can cause rapid changes.
  • Brain development at this age is also dramatic for both tween boys and girls.
The tween years are also when kids begin to develop a true sense of self. They may go through many phases before they get to be the person they will be as an adult and it all begins as a tween.
Tweens will often begin to explore new interests and passions. A boy may have enjoyed soccer as a child, but find basketball to be his sport in middle school. He may even give up sports entirely and choose to build robots. A girl may learn that she's more creative after a summer art class and ask for paints one week or join the drama club the next.
These interests will often change over the next few years. Many are influenced by their friends or activities the tween's family is involved with. Along with this, your tween may change styles in clothing or taste in music. It's hard for parents to keep up with the latest tween fad!
It's important for parents to give tweens a certain sense of freedom as they go through these phases. They are discovering their individual personality and exploring all of their options.

Weekend & Alzheimer's Walk 2019

Friday:
Shortly after getting the kids from school...  and Ryan getting home, we headed to Clarion.  Ate supper with mostly everyone... and just hung out.  It was a nice evening.

Saturday:
Up and at 'em…  we headed over to Fort Dodge for the 2019 Alzheimer's Walk.  It's always one of those mornings that gives me anxiety and sadness...  just hate it really, but we do it to make a difference, or at least I hope we do.  It was a good walk - there was some misty rain on us a couple times, but overall, it was good...

We headed back to Clarion for a little bit... ate a quick lunch, then got back on the road.

Once we were back, I started laundry and the kids played a little...  Ryan went out to the church to get some things done.  It was a good afternoon...
Then we grabbed supper out, and did an errand...

Pretty quiet night.

Sunday:
Church, and then a day of rain.  Man, it rained off and on all day.  We did an errand, then that was about it... Flag FB was cancelled, so we really just enjoyed the day.

Making EndAlz bracelets - with Ed and Salvi.

Thank god for Aunt Tricia.

I was a Walk Champion this year for raising a good amount of money!

Basketball update

I feel like pictures and posts have been "Cora heavy" lately.

So...  because I don't want to forget, and this is our little journal --- I'm going to quickly jot down what's going on with Kayson and the basketball team.

Currently - practices on Mondays and Thursdays - 7-8:30

In addition - homework.  He has homework to do each week.  Now - not going to lie - we have been lacking on this a little. He needs to do free-throws, ball handling, hip raises, push ups, wall sits... and something else.  Between school work, and just having down time that he needs, it's hard... but each night we've at least tried to do a little...  and I guess it makes me do some of the stuff too.

So far, those practices are 'hard' he says!  I think Mondays are more of conditioning practices - he's said the last two Monday nights that he is sore - his abs are sore and so are his legs.  He's working so hard.  I just keep telling him - he'll get stronger!!

It's been fun to watch him come home from the practices... always in good spirits too.

Kayson - Honor Choir!

More exciting news here for the Taylor's...
Kayson tried out for the 5th Grade Honor Choir at school... and made it!

Gosh darnit, I'm so proud of him... for just wanting to do something like that and then making it!  I continue to be blown away at the things the kids are doing and wanting to do.  I'm thrilled.

Unsure what this will all entail, but there will be some rehearsing and some singing at certain school activities, as I understand it!  Super excited for that kid.

She's riding a bike!!

First off - Kayson does not know how to ride a bike, nor does he want to learn (right now).  I've just picked my battles with that... and whatever works for him.

Second, last weekend - Cora demanded Ryan to take the training wheels off of Kayson's bike.  and then all of the sudden, there I was - running next to her and sweating!!!...  attempting to get her to balance, stay steady and straight.  We did this for about an hour and a half.  I was exhausted!  ha.

She practiced again Monday night...  and Wednesday night...
and she's pretty much got it!

She struggles a little getting started...  she can't really figure out that she can move the bike with her legs on the ground, then pop her feet up on the pedals.  And then the stopping thing is a little iffy too.  BUT she's learning, and determined.  (Totally that second child).

I'm so darn proud of her.

Weekend/Cora's 7th Birthday Party

Friday:
By Friday night I was done. I was wiped out... tired, crabby and honestly just wanted to sit.  But I couldn't.  Ryan got home from his long week in SD.  I made a quick supper at home, and then we just played outside.  Martina, Tate and Landry arrived about 7ish...  they were coming for Cora's birthday party the next day.

We just hung out outside for awhile, then eventually Cora showed her exhaustion.  I got the girls bathed, and Cora went to bed.

It was a quiet evening after that...

Saturday:
Just hung out in the morning... then we headed to Glazed Expressions for Cora's friend birthday party.  She was excited, and knew where everyone was going to sit.  Oh my gosh.  To be 7 again.  Anyway, the party was really good... the kids chose their pottery, and then they painted it.  It was good... very cute, the kids were good, and it was fun.  It was a pretty solid 1.5 hours...

Then back home... ate a quick lunch, then Martina and the kids got back on the road. Super quick trip for them, but nice of them.

The rest of our afternoon consisted of laundry, watching the Iowa/Iowa State game that lasted about 6 hours due to weather delays, the kids playing (Olivia hung with us for about 3 hours!), and just hanging out. It was actually a really nice afternoon and evening...  I think we needed the 'nothing'.  In addition, Cora demanded that Ryan take off the training wheels on K's bike.  So he did... and her and I rode her bike for about an hour or more... she rode it pretty well - a little wobbly, but she'll for sure get it... we just need to get back out there.

Sunday:
Church
Groceries
Flag football in the HEAT.  Oh my gosh - I am over the summer weather!!

Then another busy Sunday night...  Ryan and I, along with another family met at another families house for supper.  Awhile back we 'bid' on a meal at a church families house... we won.  And last night was the only night (for a while) that really worked for the entire group.

We got a sitter (actually 2)… long story... and we were off right after flag football.  Anyway, we had a good time... great food and tons of laughs.  It was nice getting to know them better and just having a small group together...  super good.

We got home late... which sucked, but the kids were fine - super tired, but fine.  Kayson didn't really say much, so I worried about him, but I think he was just pooped.

And now we are back to work and school.

She loved this!!

The group, minus Eleanor.

Dance 2019!

Dance classes have officially started again!
Cora will be taking the following classes:
Level 1 Tap/Ballet - Tuesday nights from 5-6 with Miss Madi
Hip Hop - Thursday nights from 6:15-6:45 with Miss Roni

We decided to skip tumbling... only because of the cost, and time commitment.  Cost gets a little out of hand... and we felt 2 nights at the studio was plenty.

I'm excited to see how she grows this fall/winter... and then the big decision of if we will try out for the Elite team.  As of now, Cora does not want to try out... but I feel she would be awesome at it...  but it's a HUGE commitment.

Weekend

Another weekend gone...  and can't believe we are into September.  I say it all the time, time goes too fast.  I mean - where did April go?  And the summer.  Wow.

Friday:
We stayed in...  there was talk to go to the HS Waukee football game, but after some discussions, we just decided to stay home.  We'll try to go to one when MAYBE it won't be so busy.  It's just so chaotic at those games... nothing like a little Clarion or Creston football game!

So the kids watched a movie...  a dumb one on Netflix.  I tried to stay interested, but it was just dumb.  ha.

Saturday:
Ryan worked all morning... his busy season, which I start to really hate!  Anyway, Cora attended the Waukee Dance Team clinic again (she did one last spring).  She was lucky enough to be in Brittlyn's group, they learned a little 40 second dance... and enjoyed 3 hours away from home.  ha.  She had fun, and did awesome.  The kids are able to dance at a JV FB game this week, but with our schedule, it's just not going to work for her to go...  which is ok.

Saturday afternoon Cora and Olivia played nearly the entire afternoon.  Gosh - such cute little friends.  Kayson and I did some football throwing, but that's about it.  We watched the Iowa FB game... and just took it easy.

Saturday night we met up with Orfanos' at SmashPark.  We played there a little... ate... and that's about it.  It was SUPER crowded...  which is a little uncomfortable... and is better for the kids when it's not so busy.  But it was fine...  we made the best of it...  and had super owly kids on the way home.

Sunday:
Church... and then quickly home...  This is the week where Ryan is in SD Sunday through Friday.  The dreaded week of all his busy season.  It's like I can barely talk or think about it... and then when he's walking out the door, I bawl.  Ugh, I hate it.  This week is such a crazy busy week too...  I just pray I get through it all.

Sunday afternoon Kayson had his first Flag Football game.  We went with i9 Sports again... Ryan and Jarren are coaching again too...  Jarren did good today for the first game and not knowing the kids.  It was fun to watch the kids - Hud, Carter W and Brody are all on the team with K, so that's super cool.  Good kids... and should be 'easy' and fun for the boys.

Then we quickly took K to a birthday party...  (not something I was thrilled about, but he begged)…  Cora and I got groceries really fast, ate food super fast, picked K up... and finally had about 30 minutes of quiet.  I was exhausted and it was only 7:20.

Anyway... lots of stuff this weekend.  and even more this coming week...

Dax had had enough... so he was not in on the picture.

Need to take more pictures of Kayson.

Eleanor and sis 'dancing' at Flag FB.  So cute.
